Urban agriculture has long been identified as a valid solution to guarantee food security and the creation of small profitable businesses in developing and non-developing countries. As is known, the number of inhabitants in cities has recently exceeded the number of inhabitants in rural areas, resulting in an extension of the concrete surface and a greater distance from food supply areas.

Aquaponics is a sustainable agricultural practice that integrates aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). This symbiotic system allows for the efficient production of both fish and plants, where the fish waste provides essential nutrients for plant growth, and the plants, in turn, help purify the water for the fish.

Hyperspectral imaging is widespread in crop nitrogen (N) monitoring for precision agriculture, although approaches that address the agronomical recommendation of the optimal N rate are still lacking. Here, two approaches are explored in defining the optimal N rate to be supplied in fertigated processing tomatoes through hyperspectral imaging. The first one, called the N uptake approach, focuses on the virtual reproduction of the critical N uptake curve through the estimation of both aboveground biomass and crop N uptake.

The presentation focused on the integration of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)-based feed in aquaponics systems. It explored the potential of BSFL to address food security, environmental sustainability, and economic challenges through innovative and circular agricultural practices.

Land desertification, water scarcity, and food security challenges in arid zones are intensifying, driving the need for sustainable agricultural solutions like aquaponics. This study investigated innovative water and energysaving strategies using an integrated dynamic model for an on-demand industrial aquaponics system in Israel.

Anina Kappeler’s Master Thesis titled “An agri-food value chain analysis with a focus on environmental and economic impacts of hydroponics: A case study on tomato cultivation in Morocco” provides an in-depth examination of the agri-food value chain specific to hydroponic tomato farming in Morocco.
