Innovative Insect Farming Takes Flight at UNIBO

We’re excited to share that the University of Bologna’s Insect Farm has begun new experiments in a state-of-the-art incubator, a vital addition made possible by the FrontAg Nexus project. This new phase of research dives into sustainable insect farming, exploring cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional feeds.

The focus of the initial experiment is on the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, where we’re comparing its growth on a standard diet against a low-cost alternative made from bakery waste. This not only helps in cutting down costs but also tackles food waste, making our agricultural practices more sustainable.

Looking forward, we aim to expand our research to include using these insects as feed in fish and chicken diets. We’re particularly excited to test how these diets, cultivated from alternative feeds, fare in terms of taste and acceptance among different farm animals.

This step towards sustainable farming could significantly change how we approach animal nutrition and waste management in agriculture. Stay tuned as we continue to explore these exciting developments and share our findings.
